This was the only restaurant in the city I actually liked. My tour guide kept telling me how great Slovene food is, and I went to a few places rated high on TripAdvisor etc and got some dishes from the famous food festival, but I was far from impressed. Gostilna na Gradu’s ingredients were the freshest I’ve tasted in Ljubljana in about a month. The dish of the day was beef cheek when I visited, and the beef was perfectly cooked, but the mushrooms and vegetables and sautéed potato actually stole the show so I ended up ordering another dish with mushrooms in it. My favorite was the sea bass though, which was a pleasant surprise since all the foods locals recommended were either pastries or meat-based. I really hope they had more vegan options that starred those roasted mushrooms they put in the beef cheek dish! And I hope the entree dishes came in a bit smaller portion sizes—half of what I actually got would have been perfect—so I can try a number of different dishes rather than labor my way through a large bowl of the same food, however good it may taste. I wonder if this means I should have explored more vegan or seafood-centered dishes during my stay here… All in all, a nice last meal in the city for sure.

Siamo stati fortunati a trovare un tavolo per il pranzo di Pasqua, prenotando solo con un’ora di anticipo. L’esperienza è stata ottima, il nostro cameriere molto professionale e cordiale, il prezzo tutto sommato onesto: la posizione del ristorante è all’interno delle mura del Castello, e quattro portate (menù degustazione) le abbiamo pagate 46 euro a testa. Era tutto molto particolare, ci è stato detto che si tratta di piatti di Lubiana tradizionali rivisitati in chiave moderna. L’unione del cibo tipico e della novelle cousine mi ha sorpresa piacevolmente, anche se alcuni sapori non legavano benissimo. In ogni caso, consiglio vivamente.

Imenitno počutje v prelepem ambientu. Izbran jedilnik, vse pohvale, seveda, kuhanju. Za povrh pa še postrežba s prijaznim gospodom Amirjem, ki svoje delo obvlada "v nulo". Kaj naj rečem ob slovesu? Na čim prejšnji vnovični obisk!

We tried the chef’s risotto which was specially made vegetarian for us and two of their desserts. The food was so flavourful and we wished we had tried more of their other dishes. A very well-deserved Michelin star restaurant!

Restaurant in the castle overlooking Ljubljana. Romantic restaurant, perfect for couples. If you want light request a seat in the glass area. Otherwise, and personally I would recommend inside the restaurant within the castle walls. Excellent service, excellent wines and excellent food. Local flavours and dishes but to a very high standard.
