Školj Castle Restoration Project

Školj Castle, located on a towering cliff overlooking the Reka River canyon, represents a stunning yet lesser-known piece of Slovenia's history. Nestled within the boundaries of the Škocjan Park region and just a few kilometers from Famlje village, this historical site has fallen into neglect for over a century. Abandoned and left to the mercy of nature, its once-grand structure is now suffering from significant degradation. Currently, only about 45% of the original castle remains intact, but its strategic and socio-cultural significance presents an opportunity for restoration.

The Current State of Školj Castle

For years, Školj Castle has stood amidst the elements, slowly being overtaken by the wild surrounding environment. Although its physical presence has diminished, the essence of Školj still thrives in the memories of the local elder population who cherish its rich history.

Scientific Expeditions and Research

Our team embarked on a comprehensive research journey to analyze the construction phases of Školj Castle. Through meticulous study and collaboration with various sources, including local archives and historical institutions like Park Škocjanske Jame, we have reconstructed the castle’s architectural blueprint. Utilizing blueprints, old photographs, and insights from local historians, we developed a detailed 3D model that depicts the original splendor of Školj Castle.

3D Reconstruction Efforts

The reconstruction process involved numerous revisions of the 3D model, continually enhancing it as new historical data emerged. Our attention to detail extended to texture application, where we strived to match the original materials' colors and qualities. With optimal lighting and careful consideration of the surroundings, we have achieved a highly accurate visual representation of Školj Castle, which has garnered praise from experts such as archaeologists and historians.
