Some places age. Others age well. This pool aged like a sea-soaked legend. I remember this spot from my waterpolo days - about 40 years ago - when the local league had us diving into “refreshing” (read: freezing) seawater in early May or late September. Back then, nearly every coastal city in the former Yugoslavia had its own version of this unheated, no-frills, salt-kissed pool where teenage gladiators in speedos battled for local glory. Getting there often meant cruising scenic, sickeningly curved Adriatic roads (highways were still a myth), grumbling about post-game plans and pre-game sea temperatures. Simpler times. While many of those old-school pools have since been modernized or bulldozed, Kolovare has proudly stuck around. And not just as a relic - it’s evolved. The massive 10-, 5-, and 3-meter dive platforms now rise like minimalist sculpture against the sunset sky, creating what might be the most iconic diving skyline on the Adriatic - possibly the entire Mediterranean. I was here with my youngest - a medal-winning diver at the age of 10 - for an international competition held at the nearby, more modern indoor facility. But it was Kolovare Pool and Diving Platform, raw and real, that drew us in. A place with history, grit, and now, a promising future of new memories for a new generation. So long, Zadar. I’ll be back. Preferably in summer - when the water’s warm enough.
