The Genex Tower, also known as the Western City Gate, is one of the most iconic and controversial architectural landmarks in Belgrade, Serbia. Designed by architect Mihajlo Mitrović and completed in 1977, this brutalist structure is a defining example of late socialist Yugoslav architecture. Standing at approximately 115 meters, the tower consists of two connected skyscrapers: one residential and one commercial, linked by a two-level sky bridge. At its time of construction, it was one of the tallest buildings in the Balkans and a symbol of modern progress. Today, it serves as a powerful visual reminder of a bygone era. From an architectural perspective, the Genex Tower is both fascinating and divisive. Brutalism is not to everyone's taste, but those who appreciate raw concrete aesthetics will find the structure imposing and dramatic. The cylindrical tower with the rotating restaurant at the top (no longer operational) adds a unique silhouette to Belgrade’s skyline. Unfortunately, the building has suffered from years of neglect. While parts of it are still inhabited, others appear abandoned or in disrepair. The commercial tower is almost entirely empty, and the sky bridge is no longer publicly accessible. Despite this, the Genex Tower has become a point of interest for urban explorers, architects, and photographers.
