Astronomical Observatory Overview

The Astronomical Observatory is an accredited scientific institute located in Belgrade, Serbia, dedicated to advancing research in astronomy, astrophysics, and related sciences. Established over 138 years ago, it conducts a variety of studies, including astrophysics of stars and the Sun, astrophysical spectroscopy, dynamic astronomy, and the history of astronomy.

Facilities and Resources

The main facility in Belgrade is complemented by the Astronomical Station Vidojevica, situated on Vidojevica Mountain near Prokuplje. This high-altitude site, at 1150 meters, provides an ideal environment for astronomical observations.

Research Structure

The Observatory is governed by a Director and Steering Committee, supported by a dedicated administrative team, a library, and various research groups. The research undertaken at the Observatory is funded by the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovations of the Republic of Serbia.

The Observatory houses the largest astronomical library in Serbia, featuring over 5000 books and an extensive collection of periodicals. Additionally, the staff provides educational services through postgraduate courses in collaboration with the Faculty of Mathematics and participates in international programs like the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Astrophysics and Space Science.
