Renowned for its pristine landscapes, this car-free island is a sanctuary of Mediterranean black oak and maquis, drawing attention as a prominent tourist destination, especially during the summer months where the population swells from 250 to over 6000. With a strong reliance on the surrounding marine ecosystem, local communities face increasing environmental pressures as tourism grows.
About Our Conservation Initiatives
Operation Wallacea (Opwall) is dedicated to research and conservation through immersive field expeditions, utilizing data collected during these experiences to drive actionable outcomes. Participants, including students and researchers, engage in both marine and terrestrial biodiversity surveys which contribute to a deeper understanding of ecological dynamics on Silba and its surrounding areas.
Lodging and Facilities
During expeditions, accommodations are provided in dormitory-style housing located approximately 20 minutes from the dive house. Each dormitory is shared with 8-10 participants and comes equipped with communal facilities, including a shared dining area and garden, ensuring a collaborative and supportive environment for budding researchers.
