"Welcome to Maribor", indeed. We'd been in Slovenia (for the first time) for a mere 3 hours and were shouted at and embarrassed in front of an entire restaurant clientele by a waiter. I can honestly say that I have never been so humiliated or spoken to so poorly in public by anyone, let alone anyone in a so-called customer service role, until today. When my husband and I (and our baby) first arrived at the restaurant, we saw there was a free, unreserved table outside, and so went over to it, but before we sat down we asked the waiter if the table was "OK" (meaning could we sit there?). "No, because of the rain" he responded. We stood there and waited to be offered another table, but the waiter ran off. We noticed another couple was leaving, so we took their table. I wasn't sure what to do with our baby in her pushchair, so my husband parked her next to us, admittedly blocking the walk-through (though I was planning to immediately ask whoever served us if there was a better solution or more suitable table for us). Soon, the same waiter (and a younger one) returned, and immediately started loudly and semi-aggressively having a go at us for sitting down without asking him, and scolded us for blocking the area, then ordered us off the table and to a table inside, and continued to berate us for not checking with him. He then stalked back into the restaurant, and I (somewhat in shock and slowly getting angry) loudly retorted to his back that I had already asked him about a table when we first arrived, but he either ignored or didn't hear my protestations. By now incredulous and embarrassed, we followed him inside, where he showed us a table, but repeated the same "you should have asked me about a table", shouting and literally almost screaming the last few words. The other customers were staring at us by now. I snapped. "Right, that's enough, we're leaving." As we turned back, I faced the still-shouting waiter and repeated that I'd "literally asked (him) about a table when we first arrived, but (he) hadn't helped". He then started to apologise, though sincerely, sarcastically, or for damage control in front of the already-seated customers, I'll never know. We ignored him and walked out. The saddest thing, apart from the fact that we'd been keenly looking forward to eating at this particular restaurant, is that this 'gentleman' (who, btw, directed all of this conversation and behaviour towards me, rather than my 6'3" husband) was the first Slovene I'd ever spoken to. Talk about making a great, lasting impression. A good thing that we had excellent, helpful service (especially with our baby) at the second restaurant we went to, Grill Ranc on the river bank, which saved the first evening of our holiday!

Bellissimo locale che ci ha attratto per la sua vivacità. L'interno è veramente carino. Cibi della cucina balcanica abbondanti e gustosi (consiglio di prendere in 3 i piatti di carne per 2 persone e poi eventualmente ordinare qualcos'altro).

Ljudi rasturili, ostali smo bez teksta! Hvala na gostoprimstvu i izvanrednoj usluzi. This place blew our mind. The staff is friendly and hospitable, the food unbelievable and the location superb. We went back the second day of our stay, to make sure we were not simply lucky the previous day.
