White Cross / Glavica Hill Prehistoric Hillfort
Glavica Hill, a prominent landmark on the northern shore of Stari Grad, offers visitors a unique blend of historical significance and stunning natural beauty. Atop this 111-meter-high hill stands a large stone cross that serves as a wonderful marker visible from great distances. The hill not only provides impressive views of the surrounding countryside but also overlooks the captivating approach into Stari Grad harbour.
While the stone cross, chapel, and benches are modern additions, they rest upon remnants of ancient fortifications, making Glavica Hill a site of historical importance. The hill is part of a series of hilltop watchtowers that predate the Greek settlers, featuring a circular stone base indicative of early construction techniques. It is believed that this tower, along with another at Purkin Kuk to the south, played a crucial role in the area’s defenses during ancient times.
The head of the beautiful 5-mile inlet, where Stari Grad now exists, was originally settled by an Illyrian community, which was later displaced by the ancient Greeks. The Greeks effectively fortified their control over this agriculturally rich land, which includes the renowned Stari Grad Plain. Glavica Hill, with its strategic vantage point, was vital to safeguarding this prized area, supplementing the strong city walls and additional watchtowers at Maslinovik and Tor.
The ascent to Glavica Hill is a pleasant one, featuring a well-marked stone path that winds through lush pine forests. At just about 364 feet high, the hike is not overly strenuous and is easily accessible for everyone. As you make your way up, follow the signs to reach 'Vidikovac Glavica' for the best panoramic views. From here, you can gaze eastward over Vrboska and the rest of the island, while the western vista showcases the entry to the harbour where ferries, such as the Tin Ujević, frequently dock.
Whether you're a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or simply seeking breathtaking views, Glavica Hill is an essential destination on Hvar Island.
