Serbia is a rough diamond, with hidden treasures like this so-called river monitor, named after the river it floats on. Lying in plain sight is the Austro-Hungarian military vessel that fired the first shot of World War I—aimed at its archrival, Serbia. The ship changed hands twice more, falling into the possession of Nazi Germany and later Serbia, and — no coincidence — sank to the bottom of the river both times. Beautifully restored, it now hosts an engaging exhibition on board. Although thousands of passengers on nearby river cruises pass by this lonely ship, few seem to visit—perhaps because you need good legs to enter. Access is limited to the summer season during designated hours (closed on Mondays). Your ticket is also valid for the Military Museum at Kalemegdan—and vice versa. Enjoy your visit!
