Restoration of Historic Buildings at Porto Vecchio, Trieste

The Porto Vecchio in Trieste is undergoing a remarkable transformation with the restoration of its historic buildings, bringing to life a significant part of the city's heritage. The initiative, supported by Associazione Italia Nostra Onlus and the Port Authority of Trieste, aims to preserve and enhance the unique architectural and industrial history of the area.

The Hydrodynamic Plant

Established in 1890, the Hydrodynamic Plant is the most technologically significant structure in the Porto Vecchio. It features essential machinery for distributing hydraulic power across the port. This facility was among the first of its kind globally, along with renowned ports such as Hamburg and Buenos Aires. It provided pressurized water throughout the port via extensive underground pipelines, powering various cranes and lifts essential for port operations. Following its restoration, the plant has now become a self-contained museum showcasing its historical significance.

The Electric Substation

Accompanying the Hydrodynamic Plant, an Electric Substation was constructed in 1913 to expand the facility. Designed by architect Zaninovich, this building is stylistically unique compared to other Porto Vecchio structures. It features a transformer hall and protected galleries, confirming the dignified status of industrial architecture.

Warehouse 26

Warehouse 26 stands as the largest storage building in the Porto Vecchio area, covering 30,000 square meters and extending 244 meters in length. It consists of twelve main sectors across five levels, showcasing a fascinating blend of exposed brick, wooden and cement floors, iron beams, and cast-iron columns. The restoration project has transformed it into a multifunctional space suitable for conventions, galas, fashion shows, concerts, and various art exhibitions. Notably, it hosted the Pavilion of Friuli Venezia Giulia during the 54th Venice Biennale.

The restoration of these buildings not only celebrates the rich industrial history of Porto Vecchio but also presents a diverse space for culture and events, making it a vibrant part of Trieste's urban landscape.
