Zaton Holiday Resort – 4 Stars
Zaton Holiday Resort has great locations with clean areas, good drinking water, and reliable electricity. The toilet facilities are well maintained and there is plenty of good shade around. The shows are fun and the seawater is nice for swimming. There are ice cream shops everywhere and the dining options are good. The staff is friendly and helpful.
On the downside, you have to walk quite far to get around the park. The pool is only open during the warm hours of about 10 AM to 4 PM and closed during cooler times. The buffet must be booked for 2 or 3 days at once — no single evenings — which can get expensive, around 240 euros for 4 people. Also, the trees drop a lot of twigs and leaves, so after a night there is often debris everywhere.

We came to Croatia for a holiday and stayed at the Zaton Holiday Resort, where I unfortunately experienced a very unpleasant and painful incident. I was swimming at the designated beach area in about waist-deep water when suddenly, a spiny fish emerged from the sand beneath me and stung my right palm four times. I got out of the water as quickly as I could, and that’s when I noticed that my hand was bleeding slightly and the stung area had started to feel numb. Not knowing what kind of fish it was and concerned about possible complications, I decided to head to the beach's medical center to get the wound disinfected at the very least.
By the time we got there, we saw that the doctor had closed at 4:00 PM—and it was already 4:10 PM. We still hoped someone might be around to help, especially since the numbness was rapidly spreading from my palm to my upper arm and even into my chest. At that point, it was very clear this wasn’t just a minor injury anymore.
What shocked me the most was the staff's utter indifference, incompetence, and complete lack of basic human decency. It took them 10 full minutes to even acknowledge us, and by then, the numbness had turned into a burning pain that was growing more intense by the minute. Eventually, someone who supposedly had first-aid training came out of their office—but their idea of “help” was to spray the wound with a small bottle of hand disinfectant, which was absolutely useless while I was screaming in agony from the burning pain. My entire right arm felt like it was on fire, my chest was cramping, and my neck started to swell, making it hard to breathe.
And after all this, the best they could offer was to tell us to “somehow” make our way to a nearby village where a general practitioner might be available. Apparently, the resort's doctor had finished work 30 minutes earlier, so there was no point waiting. They basically told me to go die somewhere else.
At this point, I had to take control of the situation myself. Based on my own knowledge, I told one of my friends to kneel on my upper arm to restrict the blood flow and slow the spread of the venom, because clearly we couldn’t count on any help from the staff. I also asked another friend to call an ambulance.
Thankfully, the paramedics arrived quite quickly and treated me properly. They even praised us for restricting the blood flow, saying we did the right thing. They also gave me a strong painkiller that finally started to work. That’s when I learned I had been stung by a weever fish, whose venom can be fatal in cases of allergic reactions. I was “lucky” that I handled the symptoms and pain as well as I did.
But perhaps the most outrageous part of the whole ordeal was the fact that no one—absolutely no one—was willing or able to speak English. Everyone only spoke Croatian. Luckily, one of my friends is fluent in Croatian, otherwise we would have been completely helpless. The resort staff treated us with a level of contempt, carelessness, and outright rudeness that was beyond anything I’ve ever experienced. Their behavior was disgusting. They clearly couldn’t care less about the safety or well-being of their own guests.
This experience completely ruined our trip, and I can say with absolute certainty that I will never return to this resort.
