I had an excellent stay at Mr. Leopold Horak’s apartment in Zagreb from 12th February to 5th March 2025 during my 21-day research internship at the University of Zagreb, FER, under the DTE Overseas Winter Internship program. I was part of a group of seven students from various State Engineering Colleges across Assam, India, and I represented Dhemaji Engineering College. Being the only junior among the group, where most were in their final year, I had a remarkable experience both personally and professionally. I hail from Sivasagar, Assam, and this stay added unforgettable memories to my first international internship. Accommodation & Facilities The apartment exceeded our expectations in terms of comfort and amenities. The group consisted of five boys and two girls, where the boys were accommodated on the first floor in a spacious apartment, and the girls stayed in a similar facility in the basement. Key highlights of the apartment included: • A modular kitchen with modern appliances like a chimney, oven, and refrigerator. • An underfloor heating system that provided comfort during the winter season. • Efficient water heating systems for both washbasins and bathrooms. Mr. Horak was an exceptional host who always approachable, supportive, and quick to resolve any concerns, ensuring a smooth and pleasant stay. Location & Accessibility The apartment is located in a peaceful, hilly area of Zagreb, perfect for those who appreciate tranquility and nature. While the university and main town required some travel, the serene environment made it worthwhile. • Public Transport: Two bus stops were within a 3–5-minute walking distance from the apartment: • Bus 205 (Bidrovec Route) – The shortest route to Dubrava, the first town point. • Bus 208 (Vidovec Route) – Slightly longer but convenient, passing by the local supermarket. Both buses operated every 30 minutes until 12:30 AM, making travel manageable. • Supermarkets: • A small Konzum supermarket was located along the 208 Vidovec route, just a 2-3 minute walk from the apartment. It was ideal for daily essentials and was open from 7 AM to 8 PM (closed on Sundays). • For more variety, Super Konzum in Dubrava was about 10 minutes away. • Private Transport: Uber and Bolt services were available, though food delivery options were limited in the area. Memorable Experiences One of the most cherished moments was a hiking trip to Gorscica Point, organized by Mr. Horak towards the end of our stay. The 1 hour 30 minutes uphill hike offered stunning views and a refreshing experience. We were joined by Mr. Horak and a Ukrainian family i.e Teu and his father, making the experience even more delightful and memorable. Exceptional Support During our departure, we faced an issue with Uber regarding luggage transportation. Despite the late hour, Mr. Horak personally arranged for our safe transfer to the airport, ensuring a smooth and worry-free departure. His kindness and support were deeply appreciated and Mr. Horak’s mother was very lovely and sweet. Final Thoughts I highly recommend this apartment for anyone seeking a cozy, homely stay in a serene, hillside location. It’s ideal for those who appreciate nature and don’t mind a little extra travel to reach the city center. For an authentic experience, try local Croatian dishes like štrukli, burek, cheeses, bakery items, seafood, and Croatian beers and wines. Also, explore local air markets for fresh produce. Overall, my stay at Mr. Leopold Horak’s apartment was highly satisfactory. His hospitality, warmth, and constant support made my and our group’s experience truly memorable. It was an amazing experience staying at this location. Although a bit far from the centre of the city, it had all the necessary ammenities for a comfortable stay including heated floors, washing machines, ovens, dryer, iron etc. They were happy to provide us with everything that we needed. The host and his mother were extremely helpful and courteous. They were kind enough to show us around the neighborhood as well as guided us about the routes, transportation and the convenience stores. Overall, I highly recommend this property to anybody who is looking for a peaceful and comfortable stay in Zagreb.
