The Momjan Castle: A Historic Landmark in Istria

The Momjan Castle, perched above the picturesque Dragonja River, is a significant cultural site in Istria, Croatia. Known historically as Rota Castle, it was owned by the Rota family for several centuries. This impressive fortress stands at an elevation of 280 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the Dragonja valley and serving as a border point between Croatia and Slovenia.

Historical Significance

First documented in 1035, the castle's history is rich and complex. It came under the authority of the Patriarch of Aquileia in 1102, marking the beginning of its evolution as a fortified structure. The construction of the castle commenced in the first half of the 13th century, bestowed upon the Counts of Devin by the Patriarch. Over the years, the ownership of Momjan shifted frequently due to conflicts and allegiances, highlighting the turbulent historical landscape of the region.

Architectural Features

Throughout its storied past, the castle has undergone several renovations, especially under the direction of Simone Rota, who acquired it in 1548. Rota introduced a trapezoidal design with a square tower, which has been transformed into living quarters. Additionally, he constructed a chapel dedicated to St. Stephen and a new stone bridge, enhancing both its functionality and aesthetic appeal.

A Place of Abandonment and Legend

Despite its impressive architecture and strategic location, the Momjan Castle was abandoned in 1835 when the Counts of Rota relocated to a more lavish residence in the village. This led to the gradual decline of the castle, which was left to the ravages of time. Nevertheless, the castle remains a captivating relic of Istria's past, inviting visitors to explore its fascinating history and enjoy the stunning views it offers.

Today, the Momjan Castle stands as a testament to Istria's rich heritage, making it an essential destination for history enthusiasts and travelers alike. Helaas staat het kasteel in de steigers en is het afgesloten om te bezoeken. Jammer dat dat nergens terug te vinden is.

The Momjan Castle is a ruined building worth visiting if you like the distant past. A very charming place that has yet to be restored for a larger number of visitors. The history of this fortress is very interesting and turbulent. It is one of the more picturesque symbols of medieval Istria. The fortress is located above the Argilla stream on a rock surrounded by cliffs at an altitude of 280 meters above sea level, and today it is still trying to resist the ravages of time. The extraordinary defensive and strategic position of this building has enabled control over nearby roads and fertile land throughout history. It was mentioned as a fortress in the 13th century during the time of Woscalc, the son of a powerful Aquileian vassal who also used the title “Momjanski” (de Mimiliano). In the 16th century, it was purchased by the knight Simone Rota from Bergamo, who rebuilt the fortress into a trapezoidal shape, renovated the living quarters, erected the chapel of St. Stephen, and built a new stone bridge. His family and descendants lived in the castle for the next 300 years, so the castle is often called Rota Castle (although this is not its official name). The Momjan Castle experienced a Renaissance at that time and until its abandonment in 1835 it was used as a residence. Since then, the steep decline of the once impressive medieval fortress began, losing its strategic and residential function. Today, only one of the four towers rises above the Dragonja River valley as a reminder of the rich history of this region. Fortunately, the centuries-old decline of the once proud guardian of the fertile wine-growing plains of northwestern Istria has now been stopped. The remains of the castle are being restored through publicly funded projects that are slowly restoring the old glory of this distinctive symbol of the Istrian Middle Ages.
