The Special Ornithological Reserve Palud - Palù is located just eight kilometers south of Rovinj and spans approximately 20 hectares. This unique reserve, home to a diverse range of bird species, is recognized as the only ornithological reserve in Istria. The hallmark of this area is the Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus), which thrives in the various wetland habitats.

History and Importance

Initially a freshwater swamp, Palud was altered in 1906 by the Austro-Hungarian army, who dug a channel to connect it to the sea. Although intended to reduce malaria by increasing salinity, this change led to the establishment of a unique ecosystem inhabited by mullets and eels thriving in brackish waters. Today, the reserve boasts an impressive diversity of approximately 220 bird species, making it a haven for birdwatching enthusiasts.

Getting There

Accessible by road from Rovinj, guests should head towards Pula and make a turn towards Camp Vestar, following signs to the reserve. A fascinating historical site within the reserve is the remains of the 11th-century church of St. Damian, where Pope Alexander III is rumored to have celebrated Mass in 1177.

Preservation and Regulations

To maintain the serenity and ecological integrity of the reserve, waste disposal and motor vehicle operations are strictly prohibited within its boundaries, although cycling is allowed. The Palud area also features a bike trail that connects to Rovinj’s Golden Cape, providing a scenic route for biking enthusiasts.
