The Laboratory for Cardiometabolic Research at the Medical Faculty of Split is dedicated to exploring the intricate relationships between metabolic and immune disorders, such as obesity, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, and cardiovascular diseases. Headed by Dr. Marko Kumrić, the lab investigates how various serum biomarkers can predict cardiovascular outcomes in conditions like heart failure and hypertension.
The lab's research includes a significant focus on how lifestyle changes affect cardiovascular health, particularly the impact of Cannabidiol (CBD) on arterial pressure and vascular health. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, part of the lab's efforts have shifted to studying the pathophysiological mechanisms associated with severe cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Some of the pivotal research projects include:
| Project Title | Duration | Funding Agency |
|---|---|---|
| Normative models of vascular biomarkers for improvement of cardiovascular risk stratification in primary and secondary prevention | 2018 - 2023 | Croatian Science Foundation |
| Translational research on neuroplasticity of breathing and the effect of intermittent hypoxia in anesthesia and sleep | 2014 - 2021 | Croatian Science Foundation |
| Scuba diving and the cardiovascular system | 2011 - 2013 | Ministry of Science and Education |
The laboratory aims to continue its groundbreaking research into cardiovascular diseases, particularly focusing on diabetic cardiomyopathy and the effects of inflammatory bowel disease on heart health. The team is committed to enhancing our understanding of these complex interactions for better prevention and treatment strategies.
