Dimnice Jama
The Dimnice Cave, nestled near the villages of Slivje and Markovščina, is a geological marvel that's captivating to visitors. As part of the stunning Karst region, this cave not only offers a unique underground experience but also showcases intriguing natural phenomena.
Spanning approximately 8 km, the cave features two nearly 40-meter deep chasms connected by an underground passage. During winter, cold air entering one chasm expels warmer air from the other, resulting in a mesmerizing mist resembling smoke, which is how the cave got its name — "dim," meaning smoke in Slovenian.
Visitors can explore the cave's two distinct levels. The upper passages are dry and adorned with stunning dripstone formations, while the lower passages feature a flowing underground stream that eventually meets the Rižana River spring. The cave is a treasure trove of typical karst phenomena, with dripstone formations that might even become contenders for the Guinness World Records!
The Dimnice Cave welcomes visitors every Sunday at 15:30, with additional tours available by prior arrangement. Organized groups can also book special natural-science days and cave trekking experiences to enrich their visit.
For inquiries and bookings, visitors may contact local representatives. The charming setting not only provides an escape into nature but also an opportunity to learn about the unique geological features which make the Dimnice Cave a must-see destination in the region.
