Established in 1942 under the guidance of Archbishop Dr. Josip Ujčić, the Parish of St. Joseph the Worker serves as a spiritual hub for the working-class community in the Karaburma suburb of Belgrade. Although initial efforts to construct a church were thwarted by World War II and subsequent nationalization of the land, the dedication of the church leaders to fulfill this vision endured.
After the war, Archbishop Dr. Gabrijel Bukatko took on the challenge of establishing a parish dedicated to St. Joseph, reflecting the community's working-class roots. The founding of the parish was marked by several challenges, including the loss of collected resources and opposition from the local community to building a church.
Despite these hurdles, a small house was purchased in 1965, transforming it into the first public chapel. On June 22, 1965, the first Holy Mass was celebrated. In 1967, the chapel was moved to a better location, and on January 1, 1972, the parish was officially proclaimed, with the Salesian Mr. Herman Habič appointed as the first parish priest. However, plans to build a church encountered further resistance over the years.
In 1989, efforts to construct a permanent church resumed, leading to an illegal building initiative that culminated in the completion of the Church of St. Joseph the Worker on May 1, 1991. It was blessed by Archbishop Franc Perko and has since become a cherished landmark in Belgrade. Referred to as “the beauty” of the city, the church is renowned for its inviting atmosphere, where parishioners find comfort and opportunities for prayer.
The church is home to various devotions, especially honoring St. Joseph every Wednesday, with special celebrations on May 1st, the feast day of St. Joseph. The beautiful setting by the river Danube offers a serene space for reflection and community gatherings.
