Križevci Religious Sights

Križevci, a charming town rich in history and culture, offers an array of significant religious sights that evoke the past and celebrate the town's spiritual heritage. Below are the prominent chapels and churches that capture the essence of Križevci’s religious architectural landscape.

Chapel of St Roch

Located near the town cemetery in the northern part of the Upper Town, the Chapel of St Roch is a Votive Church built in 1694 and restored in 1998. The chapel features statues of St Roch, St Sebastian, and St Fabian, carved by the renowned Varaždin sculptor Fridrik Petter. Regular services are held here, and its bells signify eternal rest for the deceased.

Chapel of St Florian

This Baroque chapel, constructed in 1735, sits near the town Post Office. Renowned for containing valuable paintings, it honors its patron saint, St Florian. Each year, firemen commemorate their saint with flowers at the chapel. The chapel also holds a wooden statue of St Florian and a main altar with a painting attributed to Ivan Ranger, depicting St Florian guarding the chapel from fire.

Chapel of St Mark of Križevci

The Chapel of St Mark, also known as St Ladislaus, is an early Baroque structure built in the 17th century. It features significant Baroque architectural elements and restored altars housing a contemporary painting of St Mark by local artist Zoran Homen. A remarkable wooden pulpit adorned with statues of the four evangelists enhances the chapel’s interior, which underwent restoration efforts in the early 1990s.

Church of St Sava

Designed by Vilim Higersberger and built between 1893 and 1904, the Eastern Orthodox Church showcases a simplistic Classicist style with captivating geometrical ornamentation. The interior features an iconostasis painted in a Byzantine style by Miljenko Gjurić. The church underwent renovations in 2006 to restore and preserve its aesthetic integrity.

Synagogue

The former synagogue, located in Strossmayer Square, was designed in a blend of Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Classical styles. Converted into a Youth House in 1950, it now hosts various cultural activities, although plans are in place to relocate these groups, transitioning the synagogue into The Croatian State Archives.

Conclusion

Each of these religious sites in Križevci not only embodies the town's spiritual history but also serves as a testament to its architectural beauty and cultural richness. They are not just places of worship but also pivotal pieces of the community’s heritage.
