Got its name from the Congress of Laibach conference in 1821 held on this exact place by members of Holly Alliance, the five Great Powers of Europe after the Napoleonic wars. It was later renovated by famous architect Joseph Plečnik and was added to the list of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites because of that. The Kingdom of SHS was proclaimed on this square after the World War I. The new Slovenian nation was born on this square in 1989, when the poet Tone Pavcek read the May Declaration in front of a large gathering of some tens of thousand of people. Bill Clinton addressed Slovenians with a inspirational speech on this square in 1999 and got roaring ovations. I remember his uplifting speech and will never forget his words.
