A Wasteful and Ineffective Embassy: Shut Down the U.S. Embassy in Zagreb The American Embassy in Croatia is a glaring example of government waste. It serves no meaningful strategic or diplomatic function and is staffed by a bloated roster of employees—many of whom are Croatian nationals whose allegiance is naturally to Croatia, not the United States. Why are American taxpayers footing the bill for this? Even basic functions like consular assistance are buried under layers of indifference and incompetence. American citizens are not just ignored—they are grossly disrespected by this embassy’s staff. The treatment of Americans by local hires is dismissive and hostile, and unfortunately, the interim consular chief recently transferred from Macedonia, is no better. She is indifferent, unresponsive, and condescending, and has demonstrated zero interest in actually assisting Americans in need. If anything, she reinforces the perception that this embassy exists to protect Croatian interests, not serve U.S. citizens. This entire operation should be one of the first items cut from the federal budget. Keep two American officials to handle emergencies and shut down the rest. There is no reason to maintain a fully staffed embassy in a country with no relevance on the world stage. The American Embassy in Croatia is a money pit, not a mission—and it’s time Congress and the State Department start acting like stewards of taxpayer dollars instead of protectors of dead weight.
