Cravaticum - Boutique Museum of the Cravat

Cravaticum is a unique and dedicated boutique museum celebrating the history and cultural significance of the cravat. Located in the heart of the city, this one-of-a-kind museum offers an engaging experience where visitors can explore the fascinating origins and evolution of this iconic fashion accessory.

Historical Significance

According to legend, the first cravats were crafted by girls and women in Croatia for the men departing for the Thirty Years' War (1618 - 1648). These garments symbolized good luck and a safe return home. The French soldiers, noting the scarves worn around the necks of Croatian soldiers, referred to them as “La Cravat” (from Croat). This marking gave birth to the cravat's journey from military necessity to a beloved fashion statement.

The Evolution of the Cravat

Following the war, a special regiment known as the Royal Cravates was established in France in 1667, named after Croatian soldiers known for wearing cravats. The transition of the cravat from a military accessory to a fashionable item is attributed to Louis XIII, while in Croatia, renowned poet Ivan Gundulić was known to wear one.

We just went to this museum and had an amazing experience! We learnt about tie’s history, their importance in fashion and tried to do some tie knots (there are more than 85!, couldn’t try them all tho). The guided tour that Kristina gave us was amazing! Super informative and fun!

A delightfully quirky museum that has gone all Out to provide information and hands on fun . The staff were exceptional. We walked straight in- Ot’s only a small area so a big group (20) would fill it up

Visited on Saturday and there was only us. Kristina was super nice and did a tour for us - she was knowledgeable and engaging throughout the tour, from sharing about the history to the different ways of tying a tie. Would 100% recommend visiting if you’re in Zagreb!!!!!!

Merci Kristina. Fantastic. We loved the museum. It is funny, unique and interactiv. We learnt a lot about the tie thanks to Kristina. She is adorable. She shared stories to us, which was way better than reading. I recommand it. Thanks Kristina.

Had a fantastic time here learning a ton about the history of the tie and its place in Croatian history! Leon gave a great tour that was equally informative and funny, and we really enjoyed chatting with him afterwards. It’s a small museum that we spent about an hour at, and it’s absolutely worth your time to stop by!

Neat little museum that guides visitors through the origins and history of ties with an introduction video and exhibits. There's also an interactive section in the back where visitors can learn how to tie a tie. If you're lucky enough to visit when Leon is manning the desk, the man is a font of knowledge, not just on ties, but history itself. He's the guy students wished they had for a history teacher, so feel free to ask him questions.
