BELGRADE SYNAGOGUE

Welcome to Sukat Shalom, Dwelling of Peace

Sukat Shalom serves as the heart of the Jewish community in Belgrade, standing as a testament to a rich history that dates back to before the Turkish conquest. Though the first official Jewish community in Belgrade was established in 1866, evidence suggests a presence even earlier, with synagogues in place since the seventeenth century. Sukat Shalom, the sixth synagogue built by the Jewish community in Belgrade, has a significant historical legacy.

The cornerstone for Sukat Shalom was laid on June 15, 1924, with the structure completed by November 1, 1925. The ceremonial dedication took place in the summer of 1926, coinciding with the final interior touch-ups, which emphasized the synagogue's Ashkenazic heritage. The bilingual cornerstone, featuring Hebrew and Serbian inscriptions, was signed by notable figures such as Rabbi Shlang and the royal family of King Aleksandar Karadjordjevich and Queen Marija.

Previously, the old Ashkenazic synagogue (1869-1925) was situated nearby in what once housed the national theatre. The area surrounding Sukat Shalom boasts a picturesque yard. Historically, the building included amenities like a mikvah (ritual bath), cafeteria, a sports hall, and residential spaces for communal leaders such as the shochet and shamash, with additional apartments for the rabbi and educator situated upstairs. The seating capacity was significant, with around 300 places available on the main floor and an additional 180 in the gallery, known as ezrat nashim.

Tragically, the synagogue faced dark times during the Nazi occupation from 1941 to 1944 when it was desecrated and misused. Following the war, it was rededicated in a somber ceremony attended by the surviving members of the Belgrade Jewish community. Today, the synagogue reflects a blend of both Ashkenazic and Sephardic traditions among its members.

In 2002, the synagogue was officially named Sukat Shalom. Presently, it stands as the only functioning synagogue in Belgrade and all of Serbia. The Belgrade Synagogue website aims to serve as a vital resource, providing insights into the significant events and day-to-day life of Jews in Serbia, alongside a deep exploration of their customs and traditions.
