This is my local supermarket, and I come here at least three times a week. Central Ljubljana seems to only offer Mercator (apart from two small Spars) - I believe the Mercator monopoly is a remnant from Communism times. Their range of products with long shelf lives is excellent, and you get the feeling that this is a "posh" supermarket. But don't be deceived - fresh produce is of deficient quality. Most fruit here is overripe; their Bananas are always bruised and it is not unusual to pick up a rotten Lettuce. My favourite dry sausage, Kulen, from the deli counter (the "already cut" selection) was rancid. Tip: request your cut meats to be sliced there and then - do not use their already cut version - I mean that's the whole Idea of a deli counter. In summer, fruit flies are all over their fruit section. When it's strawberry season - they don't sell strawberries. If you want bread (good bread) you have to queue for it - remember Russia in the 80ies?) Forget about Nespresso Capsules or Magnum Ice Cream. I don't mind paying more for my groceries - I love Waitrose or Whole Foods, because they offer a fab service. But at Maxi Mercator, I resent paying their high prices for an inferior shopping experience. In my honest opinion - I think you're better off at Hofer or Lidl with regards to fruit and veg.
