About the Astronomical Observatory

The Astronomical Observatory is an accredited scientific institute dedicated to research in astronomy and astrophysics. With its main premises situated in Belgrade, in the Zvezdara municipality, the Observatory also operates the Astronomical Station Vidojevica on the Vidojevica mountain near Prokuplje. The institution is governed by a Director and a Steering Committee, ensuring a structured approach to its scientific endeavors.

Research and Expertise

Our dedicated team of scientific staff is organized into research groups, focusing on various aspects of astronomy, including:

Support and Funding

Research activities are supported by the Serbian Ministry of Science, Technological Development, and Innovations, which oversees the Observatory's operations and evaluates its scientific output.

Key Projects

Among our notable research projects are:

• MOBY: This project utilizes advanced numerical methods to investigate binary star systems and their relation to gravitational wave phenomena.
• URbObsBel: Aimed at establishing an Urban Observatory in Belgrade, this initiative seeks to enhance local astronomical observation capabilities.

Educational Initiatives

The Observatory also plays a significant role in education through its collaboration with the Department of Astronomy at the Faculty of Mathematics, offering workshops and courses as part of the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master program in Astrophysics and Space Science.

Library Services

The Observatory houses the largest astronomical library in Serbia, boasting over 5,000 books and approximately 100,000 issues of periodicals dedicated to astronomical research.
